I'm a proud Saskatoon resident, I love this city, love living here and have always found that Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in fact seems to suffer a little due to low self esteem. The boom of the past couple of years has truly brought this to light with the constant debate over property values, with many people feeling the bubble would burst, expressing that Saskatoon homes were not worth the values they were selling for... My counter has always been simple - What makes us worth less than Edmonton - really does a massive mall, Ikea, and a couple pro sports teams make a home worth more? Of course not!
This situation seems to slowly be changing, many peoples opinions are changing, many realizing that "oh this is a good place to be" with the majority of the world experiencing a significant economic downturn, Saskatoon and Saskatchewan as a whole for the most part has felt unaffected - yes some industries have been hit, while others have experienced growth seeming to maintain that balance. It seems funny though that it has taken the validation from outside of Saskatchewan such as CNN headline stories, National News stories etc. to get through to many local residents that yes Saskatoon is a great place to be. This does seem to illustrate that group think is similar to individual self talk in how individuals often rely on external validation of their worth.
The ViewSaskatoon.ca Social Profiles and integrated Blogging platform is an opportunity for local residents, and anyone else who has enjoyed the city to create an account, connect with others, but most importantly share those positive stories, anecdotes, observations etc. The idea is to begin uplifting our collective consciousness of Saskatoon from within.
