For anyone simply looking for the results and not my commentary Don Atchison won his third term with what's being described as a landslide... how much of a landslide you can have with only a reporter 27.3 per cent turnout at the polls I don't know.

So the whole point of putting together the blogging feature of ViewSaskatoon.ca was to encourage positive uplifting stories and commentaries on our wonderful city, so in an effort to stay true to this vision here is my positive spin:

"Had 30% of our apathetic citizens opted to show up and cast a wasted ballot as a matter of statement for one of the very unlikely candidates such as the street busker (don't even know his name), Don Atchison wouldn't have even been a contender in this race he would have lost by a land slide"

I make this point for a very specific reason, yesterday I was bombarded by notifications from Twitter and other source to "go out and vote today" or "If you don't vote, don't complain afterwards" and had everyone like myself who simply didn't feel any of the candidates represented strong, effectual leadership that our city deserves come out and cast a ballot in for the "Elephant Party" as my father used to call it during federal elections, the "Elephant Party" would be the new Mayor.

Not turning out at the polls is indicative of a larger problem that needs to be addressed, while I congratulate Don Atchison on his re-election and breathe a sigh of relief that of the candidates he did win and our city wasn't under the leadership of a ex-con street busker I would encourage him to look at the issue of voter apathy.

Now I understand he may not want to do this as it may result in losing his hold on city hall, but one must be concerned that nearly 75% of eligible voters don't care enough to show up and cast a ballot.

Why is it that we are unable to recruit high quality candidates to run for city council, is it simply a matter of money? Is it simply too much of a pay cut...

I don't have any answers, only questions, concerns, and dissilusionment... maybe it will take the voting in of a street busker before we see any real change.
